Abstract
Since 2004, the design ofhigh entropy alloys (HEAs) has generated signifcantinterest within the materials science community due to their exceptionalstructural and functional properties. By incorporating multiple principalelements into a common lattice, it is possible to create a single-phase crystalwith a highly distorted lattice. This unique feature enables HEAs to offer apromising combination ofmechanical and physical properties that are nottypically observed in conventional alloys. In this article, an extensive overviewof multifunctional HEAs that exhibit severe lattice distortion is provided, covering the theoretical models that are developed to understand latticedistortion, the experimental and computational methods employ tocharacterize lattice distortion, and most importantly, the impact of severelattice distortion on the mechanical, physical and electrochemical propertiesof HEAs. Through this review, it is hoped to stimulate further research intothe study of distorted lattices in crystalline solids.
